Some Glatt’s Kosher Meat Products’ beef frankfurters may be contaminated with listeria pathogens.

Despite no reported illness, the Canadian Food Inspection Agency (CFIA) and Montreal-based Glatt’s issued a March 1 public advisory not to consume the Glatt’s brand, Beef Frankfurters Jumbo BBQ. The product is sold in 375-gram packages, bears the UPC 0 55627 00203 6 and has a best-before date of April 21, 2012. The frankfurters are sold in Quebec and Ontario.

Food contaminated with listeria does not necessarily look or smell spoiled, but contaminated food can cause listeriosis, a food-borne illness. Symptoms of Listeriosis include high fever, severe headache, neck stiffness and nausea.

Pregnant women, the elderly and people with weakened immune systems are particularly at risk. Infected pregnant women may experience only a mild, flu-like illness, however, infections during pregnancy can lead to premature delivery, infection of the newborn or even stillbirth.

Glatt’s Kosher Meat Products is voluntarily recalling the affected product from the marketplace, and the CFIA is monitoring the effectiveness of the recall.
