The Canadian Jewish News is an independent not-for-profit corporation publishing weekly newspapers in Toronto, Montreal, and online to serve the Canadian Jewish community. Could you be its new General Manager?
Key Responsibilities
- Act as the senior executive of the corporation reporting to the Board of Directors
- Provide oversight and management of all operations
- Make recommendations to the Board of Directors regarding strategic direction of The CJN to sustain and build The CJN’s role in the Canadian Jewish community
- Work collaboratively to develop and implement initiatives for growth of readership and revenue on print and digital platforms
- Develop and implement budgets and financial controls and ensure that the corporation and its individual departments meet their financial and editorial goals
- Hire staff and oversee the activities of senior employees and ensure appropriate training, motivation and evaluation to enhance performance of all staff
- Manage key contractual arrangements for print production, distribution, circulation and advertising and oversee the activities of all suppliers
- Manage the operations of the company’s head office in Toronto and satellite office in Montreal
- Build and maintain strong links with key community and professional organizations of the Jewish community
Education and Experience
- A minimum of a bachelor’s degree in business management or 10 years of equivalent business experience
- Experience in newspaper or print publication management, particularly advertising sales development, circulation and financial oversight
- Experience in online publication and social media applications
- Familiarity and understanding of not-for-profit operations and the Jewish community
Knowledge and Skills
- Strong leadership, management, team-building and decision-making skills
- Ability to effect change, negotiate and manage contracts
- Familiarity with and understanding of new technologies
- Ability to understand financial statements and general accounting principles, create and manage budgets
- Ability to manage time and projects on schedule and be detailed-oriented
- Ability to communicate well (written and verbal) in English with a working knowledge of French
- Ability to network with different people and groups
- Ability to resolve issues creatively and in a timely manner
- Ability to analyse data, extract trends, and initiate appropriate action
- Ability to use Microsoft Office applications at a high level, and familiarity with production software in use within the publishing industry
