If you’re active around the rim, a baller who can dish it or drain a three-pointer, the Village Shul wants you.

The synagogue, located on Eglinton Avenue, is looking for 125 to 150 guys, to participate in its inaugural Toronto Jewish Men’s 3-on-3 Basketball Tournament.

The event will take place on Tuesday, Dec. 1 from 6-10 p.m. at Hoopdome in Downsview Park. Its target is to raise $7,500 or more, but its goal is bigger than that, said tournament organizer Mike Fegelman.

“I’m really excited about getting people out regardless of religious background,” he said. Shuls from across the city of Toronto and across the denominational spectrum have been contacted and asked to participate. It is the Village Shul’s mandate to bring people together and support community engagement.  Basketball is a perfect means to attract people for a fun event that will include sports, socializing and shmoozing, he said.

A touch football event in June attracted about 100 players and raised $10,000 to support the synagogue’s operating costs.

“It was phenomenal. What I loved about it was that it was a great opportunity to bring out Jews from all walks of life – young professionals to the older demographic,” Fegelman said.

Funds for the hoops tourney will be raised from the $54 per person entry fee as well as from corporate sponsorship. Howie T’s Burger Bar will provide the food and is the corporate sponsor. Tax receipts will be issued, he added.

In addition to the football game, held at nearby Cedarvale Park, the Village Shul has also sponsored a ladies’ retreat at a private home in Forest Hill that included swimming, socializing and sushi, he said.

Also on the shul’s agenda is a pool tournament some time in the new year, Fegelman added.
