Montreal’s first Jewish mayor Michael Applebaum is facing a possible five-year prison term after he was found guilty yesterday of fraud against the government, breach of trust, conspiracy and corruption.

A number of Canadian Jews have been part of an effort to help Yazidi refugees, Paul Lungen reports.

A Jordanian-born doctor who lives in Winnipeg is claiming he was fired from the city’s St. Boniface Hospital for expressing anti-Israel views. He’s since wiped his Facebook and Twitter accounts off the Internet.

Rabbi Dow Marmur doesn’t buy the argument that U.S. President Donald Trump couldn’t possibly be anti-Semitic because he’s got a Jewish daughter and son-in-law. Rabbi Marmur also argues that the anti-Muslim sentiment that’s been whipped up by many Trump supporters does not imply support for Jewish claims regarding Israel.

Today is Holocaust Remembrance Day, and, as the Toronto Star reports, Jewish and Christian leaders convened to pray over the ruins of gas chambers at Auschwitz-Birkenau, and warned about rising xenophobic hatred in the world against Jews, Muslims and others.

If President Donald Trump indeed creates a registry for Muslims in the United States, at least two prominent women – one Jewish, one with Jewish lineage – have said they will register as Muslim in solidarity. These are former U.S. secretary of state Madeleine Albright and actress Mayim Bialik.

The Israeli, Berlin-based artist who created the “Yolocaust” project, which he made to highlight the problematic nature of posing for selfies at the city’s Holocaust memorial, has concluded the project, saying his message was effectively conveyed. He posted on his site the response from one of the selfie subjects.
