Jewish orgs decry plan to scrap long-form census

Jewish and other faith communities have denounced it, the head of Statistics Canada resigned over it, and hundreds of national charities, businesses, think-tanks and social service agencies are fuming because of the federal government’s recent decision to scrap the 2011 mandatory long-form census.

Canada joins EU in imposing new sanctions on Iran

Canada has joined the European Union in stepping up pressure on Iran. In a statement Monday, Minister of Foreign Affairs Lawrence Cannon said that, effective immediately, the government has issued a new set of sanctions aimed at curbing Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad’s quest to obtain a nuclear weapon.

Cantor remembered for musical talent and giving nature

TORONTO - Cantor Louis Harry Danto, world-renowned cantor emeritus of Beth Emeth Bais Yehuda Synagogue, died last Friday morning at Toronto’s Baycrest Hospital of Parkinson’s Disease. He was 81.
