WOMEN’S CANCERS
Aug. 25 and 26 are the dates set for the eighth annual Pharmaprix Weekend to End Women’s Cancers benefiting the Jewish General Hospital’s Segal Cancer Centre. Participants can walk all 60 km through the streets of Montreal over the two days, or just 32 km on the first day. One in seven Canadian women is diagnosed with breast or gynecological cancer in her lifetime. More than $45 million has been raised since the walk’s inception. TWO HUNDRED CHALLAHS
Twenty-five volunteers from YAD TOV (Tikkun Olam Volunteers), part of Federation CJA’s Young Adult Division, “stepped into the kosher kitchen” recently and baked nearly 200 challahs, donating them to families in need, the federation reported. YAD TOV, co-chaired by Naomi Mechaly and Jessica Amar, was launched to give young adults a short-term volunteer experience and engage them with the community in a meaningful way, using the biblical principle of tikkun olam, or saving the world. More than 18 per cent of the Jewish community lives under the poverty line. The challah project was chaired by Danielle Dichter.

TORCHBEARER
André Sabbah, who as a boy some 25 years ago was a top-ranked diver in Quebec as well as for Maccabi Canada and whose diminutive size then led him to be dubbed “le petit plongeur,” was torch bearer No. 31 at Ramsgate near London prior to the start of the Olympic Games last month, his father, Albert, reports. Sabbah now works for the International Olympic Committee in Lausanne as legal counsel in its department of legal affairs.
KIDS’ LIBRARY PROGRAMS
Registration is underway for a number of the Jewish Public Library Norman Berman Children’s Library programs that begin about one week after Labour Day. On Mondays starting Sept. 10, 10-11 a.m., there’s Rhythm, Rhyme and Story Time with Linda Kravitz for little ones ages six to 24 months (it’s also on Tuesday afternoons, 3:30-4:45 p.m. starting Sept. 11). On Tuesday mornings starting Sept. 11 with Kravitz for six- to 14-month-olds, there’s Mother Goose and Music, 10:45-11:30 a.m. On Wednesday mornings starting Sept. 12, 10-10:30 a.m., try Drop-In Storytime with Janice Cohen for two- to four-year-olds (no registration required). On Wednesday afternoons starting Sept. 12, 3:30-4:15 p.m., offered up is Mostly Music, again with Kravitz, for kids six to 24 months old. On Thursday mornings starting Sept. 13 at 10 a.m., Kravitz leads Music and Movement for babies 18 to 36 months, and 10:40 a.m. for babies six to 17 months. SYNAGOGUE SOFTBALL
At press time, Rev. Asher Tannenbaum of Congregation Shaare Zion reports, the standings in the Synagogue Softball League had the Beth Ora Bashers and TBDJays tied for first place with eight points each, followed by the Beth Zion Running Rebbes and Share Zion Lions with four points each. The Shaar Kings of Kensington had two points, while the Temple Holey Socks, alas, had yet to win a game. Contrary to a league item that appeared July 26, The CJN erred in reporting that the Montreal Torah Centre also had a team in the league (Rev. Tannenbaum was not the source of the mistake).

KNISH EGG ALERT
The Canadian Food Inspection Agency recently alerted the public that Montreal Kosher-brand knishes inadvertently omitted listing egg as an ingredient in some packaged knishes, which could conceivably cause an allergic reaction in individuals allergic to egg. Montreal Kosher voluntarily recalled the affected products. The allergy alert involved 283- and 454-gram packages, with the UPC numbers 068342006715 and 068342007019. There was only one reported reaction associated with eating the knishes, which were also distributed in Ontario.
