NEW YORK —   The man identified as the driver of the car that killed a young Satmar couple, whose newborn baby later died, surrendered to police.

Julio Acevedo, 44, of Brooklyn was arrested in the parking lot of a convenience store in Bethlehem, Pa. on Wednesday afternoon. Acevedo told police where to find him and turned himself in, the New York Times reported. He will be extradited to New York to face felony charges of leaving the scene of a vehicular accident in which a death occurred.

Acevedo told a New York news channel prior to his arrest that when he left the scene of the March 2 accident he did not know anyone had died.

Nachman and Raizi Glauber, 21-year-olds from Brooklyn, were killed when the cab they were riding in was hit by a BMW allegedly driven by Acevedo.  The couple was on their way to Bellevue Hospital in Manhattan to get medical care for Raizi Glauber, who was pregnant. The baby boy was delivered by C-section following the accident, but died two days later.

Police had been chasing Acevedo for two days, since learning he was the driver of the BMW, which was leased to a third party. Acevedo served time in prison for a 1987 killing and had a pending court date to face a drunken-driving charge, according to the New York Times.

Nachman and Raizi Glauber, 21-year-old Satmar Chassidim from Brooklyn, were killed late Saturday night while riding in a cab to Bellevue Hospital in Manhattan. The driver and passenger of the car that hit the cab fled on foot and have not been identified, the New York Post reported.  

The couple died of head injuries, according to the Post. The baby was born in the hospital and was in serious condition, but was initially expected to survive. However, a community spokesperson said the child died around 5:30 a.m. Monday morning.
