Iron Dome intercepts rockets over Ashkelon

JERUSALEM  — The Iron Dome anti-missile defense system intercepted five rockets fired from Gaza over the southern Israeli city of Ashkelon.

The Code Red warning system sounded throughout the city shortly before 2 a.m. on Thursday. No injuries or damage were reported.

Hours later, the Israel Air Force fired on several sites in northern Gaza, including an underground rocket-launcher, a weapon storage facility and a weapons manufacturing site, according to the Israel Defense Forces spokesman’s office.

“Iron Dome once more proved its efficiency in protecting the civilians of southern Israel,” said IDF Spokesman Lt. Col. Peter Lerner in a statement. ”Gaza, under Hamas rule, has turned into a hub of rocket terrorism jeopardizing innocent Israelis in the south of Israel. The IDF response was precise, swift and efficient in eliminating terror capabilities that only exist in order to terrorize, kill and maim Israelis.”

On Monday, rockets fired from Gaza landed near the site of the funeral and burial of former Prime Minister Ariel Sharon, attended by dozens of world and Israel leaders, just minutes after it had ended.
