CANCER COMPLEXITY
The findings of a Jewish General Hospital Lady Davis Institute study published in the journal Human Mutation reveal through latest genetic sequencing technology that genetic “heterogeneity,” or non-uniformity, in breast cancer is more prevalent and complex than thought and goes beyond identifying specific genetic biomarkers “to a deeper understanding of the selection pressures that bring about the genetic changes that allow malignant cells to proliferate… The search for a small number of biomarkers… is complicated by the tumour’s capacity to evolve and develop resistance to therapeutic agents,” said Dr. Bruce Gottlieb.
