The series Around the World with Woody Allen continues at Cinéma du Parc with Match Point tonight. Vicky Cristina Barcelona runs July 13-16, and Midnight in Paris July 17-19. ‘UNTOLD’ TITANIC STORY
The play Titanic: The Untold Story 1912-2012 opens at the Segal Centre’s Studio and runs until July 22. Written, directed and produced by actor Anthony Sherwood of Toronto, this is the play’s first stop since its world premiere in Nova Scotia in April. The story is told by two black men: Haitian-born academic Joseph Laroche, the only black person aboard the ill-fated ship, and Jack Johnson, the first black heavyweight boxing champion, who almost sailed on it. The conversation between these two very different men soon turns to a verbal battle. Tickets, 739-7944.

MIRIAM TURNS 50
Miriam Home and Services launched it 50th anniversary with a traditional birthday cake shared by staff, volunteers and partners in the health care network, cut by former Quebec Superior Court judge Benjamin Greenberg, a founder and chair of the year-long celebrations. Miriam, which today serves more than 600 clients, was founded by members of the Jewish community to support children and adults with intellectual disabilities. Today, it serves people of all backgrounds while fostering the Jewish identity of people from that faith. Among the planned activities is the publication of a history of Miriam, the inauguration of a new entrance for the Lori Black Centre and a speakers series, said current chair Abraham Fuks.
DOING GOOD DEEDS
Elderly residents of the Symphony Residence on the West Island were delighted recently when they opened their doors to find children delivering gift fruit baskets. The children, from the CPEs of Hebrew Foundation School, the YM-YWHA and Or Maimonide, were learning the value of performing mitzvot. The children weaved the baskets and donated the fruit. The program was co-ordinated by Federation CJA, which held a Family Mini-Mitzvah Day on the West Island, where the baskets were prepared by volunteers.
DRYDEN GOES TO SHUL
Former member of Parliament and Montreal Canadiens goalie Ken Dryden spoke to more than 140 people at Congregation Beth Tikvah in Dollard des Ormeaux on concussions in sports. He believes head injuries suffered in sports is an issue that must be taken very seriously, and he called on the game of hockey, in particular, to do everything possible to minimize risk. The event was co-sponsored by the Canadian Associates of Ben-Gurion University. BGU is is renowned for its Brain Imaging Research Centre and emergency medicine programs. Richard Levy, former general counsel for the company CCM Hockey and an associates board member, was MC. The audience also heard from West Island athlete Jess Messias about his having suffered four concussions.
MOMENT OF SILENCE
The municipal councils of Côte St. Luc and Hampstead passed resolutions asking Canada to urge the International Olympic Committee to observe a moment of silence at the London Olympics in memory of the Israeli athletes slain at the 1972 games. The Hampstead motion, moved by Mayor William Steinberg, stated, “It is necessary to commemorate this event so as to reaffirm the resolve of all civilized nations to oppose terrorism.”

A program promoting dialogue between American Jewish and Arab young adults on the Middle East conflict, Friends of Neve Shalom/Wahat al-Salam, holds workshops Aug. 12-15 and 16-19 in Vermont at Oscarsfarm, a 40-acre retreat centre in West Burke. ACCOLADES AND MORE
Former Montrealer Julian Adams, president of research and development and chief scientific officer of Infinity Pharmaceuticals of Cambridge, Mass., received an honorary doctorate from McGill University. He was recognized for spearheading the discovery and development of the drug bortezomib, marketed as Velcade. It was the first drug for patients suffering from bone marrow cancer and relapsed mantle cell lymphoma.
Lawyer David Sultan was named vice-president of the Quebec Parole Board… Physician Robert Perlman was named to the federal Transportation Appeal Tribunal of Canada… Former Jewish General Hospital director of geriatric medicine Howard Bergman is the new chair of the family medicine department at McGill University.
