MEDICAL ETHICS
The recent third annual Jewish medical ethics symposium at the Gelber Conference Centre drew physicians, nurses, social workers and other health-care professionals, as well as lawyers, clergy and the public, to discuss matters Jewish and ethical. Participants included Jewish General Hospital’s Rabbi Raphael Afilalo, Dr. Michael Bouhadana and clinical ethicist Lucie Wade, and topics for discussion included autopsies, abortion, endoscopic medical procedures, and withholding care to patients.

The Jewish Public Library is joining TD Bank’s Canada-wide free TD Summer Reading Club, which allows kids from preschool through Grade 6 to come into the JPL, borrow books and pick up reading kits that include TD passports, stickers, and other free goodies. ELDERCARE HOCKEY
The recent Jewish Eldercare Centre hockey tournament raised $65,000 toward refurbishing the centre’s 160 resident rooms. The tourney involved eight teams and 88 recreational hockey players competing for the Stanley Hyman Memorial Cup. The late Stanley conceived of the tourney, but died before its inaugural event. His widow, Guita, presented it to the winning Team Shapiro.

The Jewish Public Library and PJ Library recently hosted a Free Musical tea party at David’s Tea, where kids and parents were treated to kosher goodies and listened and danced to the music of the JPL’s Linda Kravitz.
CHANCE TO SHINE SHINES
Agence Ometz’s second annual fundraising event A Chance to Shine raised more than $340,000. More than 1,200 attended the event at Place des Arts showcasing the illusionist dance troupe Momix performing Botanica. Patron for the evening was philanthropist Herbert Black.
Lisa Rubin was recently named “interim administrator” of the Segal Centre following the departure of CEO Manon Gauthier, effective immediately, centre chair Alvin Segal and the board of directors announced. Rubin will work with artistic producer Paul Flicker in running the centre. Rubin has worked there in a number of capacities for 10 years… Concordia University’s Faculty of Fine Arts recently presented Ottawa native Phoebe Greenberg and photographer Gabor Szilasi with awards of distinction for supporting arts and culture. Greenberg was described as a “visionary” for her original design of exhibition space, and Szilasi, a native of Hungary, for his body of work in advancing photography… Earlier this month, Premier Pauline Marois presented the Insignia of the Ordre national, the highest award the Quebec government bestows, to recipients that included several Jews, including Michael Hornstein, Frederick Andermann, Arnold Steinberg and Aldo Bensadoun… Canadian Zionist Federation, eastern region president Arlazar Eliashiv recently named lawyer Donald Davis as the recipient of its 2013 Jerusalem Prize. The award will be presented at a ceremony to be announced shortly.
