ORTHODOX IN ISRAEL

The president of the largest Reform synagogue in Jerusalem, CJN columnist Yair Lootsteen, speaks on “Hats Off: Can Israel Avoid Orthodox Jewish Majority Rule?” at Temple Emanu-El-Beth Sholom from 12:15-3:15 p.m. He made aliyah from Toronto in 1979 and is a retired Israel Defence Forces colonel. The lecture series on “Antisemitism in Comparative Perspective”at McGill University, organized by the New York-based Institute for the Study of Global Antisemitism and Policy, continues with its research fellow Stephanie Courouble Share addressing “The Rise and Fall of Holocaust Denial” at 5:30 p.m. in the Leacock building, room 738. A retrospective of the works of the late artist Enid Kaplan, who died 10 years ago at age 48, is on at the Musée des maitres et artisans du Québec in St. Laurent until Jan. 13. Organized by her husband Jordan Dietcher, the show highlights Kaplan’s talent in a variety of media, notably jewelry, as well as painting, sculpture, illuminated journals and theatrical installations. Saul Polo, a product and business development specialist at Laurentian Bank Securities, was elected president of the Quebec Liberal Party. He is also co-president of the Segal Centre for Performing Arts’ Young Leaders, which encourages younger professionals and business people to   be involved in philanthropic support of the arts…

Poet Julie Bruck, a former Montrealer living in San Francisco, has been nominated for a Governor General’s Award for her collection Monkey Ranch. Translators from French to English Sheila Fischman and Shelley Tepperman have also been shortlisted for, respectively, Ru and The List. Winners will be announced Nov. 13.
