First they came for the communists, but I didn’t speak up because I wasn’t a communist….then they came for the socialists and I didn’t speak up because I wasn’t a socialist…then they came for the Jews and I didn’t speak up because I wasn’t a Jew…then they came for the trade unionists but I didn’t speak up because I wasn’t a trade unionist…then they came for the Catholics and I didn’t speak up because I wasn’t a Catholic…then they came for me and there was no one left to speak…

This is an excellent article and illustrates the failure of the Jewish community’s leadership to ‘call’ the Harper government and specifically Jason Kenney, Minister of Ctizenship, Immigration and Multicultualism, for the unjust aspects of Bill C-31 and the changes to the Federal support of health care for refugee claimants that was put through as an Order In Council last May, without any discussion in Parliament. Max Berger, an immigration lawyer who is quoted in the article wrote a letter that was published in the July 27 issue of the CJN. He pointed out that Canadian Friends of Haifa University and the University itself were honouring Kenney – as they stated in their original publicity, “for his revered leadership” as the minister! Berger went on to say: “The Canadian Friends of the University of Haifa should seek to honour someone who is imbued with the Jewish values of compassion for the underdog and the disenfranchised. There are many other deserving individuals worthy of being honoured.” It is good to see that at least some of our community leaders have begun to see the light regarding Kenney-Harper’s “revered” blundering. Let’s hope that the CIJA’s Shimon Fogel will have an impact on this awful situation, and that Hungary will NOT be named as one of the so-called “safe” countries designated by Kenney as a Designated Country of Origin. I took note that the CJN’s reporter, Andy Levy-Ajzenkopf, wrote: “Follow-up questions to Kenney’s office asking whether the delay in releasing the DCO [list] was due to Kenney’s reconsideration of the situation in Hungary were not answered.” And I urge CJN readers to read Levy-Ajzenkopf’s first piece on this subject in the Dec.6 issue (“Canadian Roma Plead For Jewish Support”) in order to gain a more complete perspective on what the Roma people are facing both in Hungary and here in Canada: http://www.cjnews.com/news/canadian-roma-plead-jewish-support .

Does CIJA have so much money and so many employees that they need to interfere in the business of government? Why are they acting as dupes in the West Bank and Jordan “dialoguing” with terrorists who see them as useful idiots? Why are they searching for solutions to the great number of Roma using Canada as a dumping ground for refugees and people trafficking in humans? Millions of dollars are being spent by our government on illegal immigrants who jump the queue, get into Canada illegally and are being used by criminals in illegal activities here in Canada. They come to Canada because it is an easy target and all of their needs are met. There is an industry of immigration lawyers who benefit from, speak out against and lobby the government because they are also making millions from this illegal activity at the same time legal refugees must wait in line. CIJA is doing this not because it has anything to do with their mandate but because SUN News and Ezra Levant have supported the government position (a government which I’d like to remind you has been the best friend to Israel as any we have had; leftist hate the Harper government for immoral and illogical ideological reasons). CIJA sees itself as the anti right-wing, not as the supporter and defender of Israel and Jewish affairs. Why are we supporting such a politically-motivated, one-sided organization that tells Jews to shut up when they encounter real threats of the Islamist variety? What makes CIJA think that their strategy is so nuanced, intelligent and sophisticated that they must keep it secret as they silence the Jewish population they are supposed to represent?

I’m ashamed that Ezra Levant continues to call himself a Jew after his hateful diatribe against our Roma brothers and sisters who suffered alongside us during the Holocaust. Why haven’t CIJA and Bnai Brith denounced this hatemonger?

Delta: There is a problem in the Roma community which does not reflect on the Roma people but does present a problem for Canada and a problem for legal immigrants from all over the world coming to Canada and being displaced by illegals. Many Roma are entering Canada illegally through criminal agents, wasting scarce resources, carrying out illegal activity when they get here that often involves human trafficking. Until this dangerous situation is stopped, it is wise for the Canadian government to find out the source of the problem and address it. If there were Jewish gangs doing the same I would have the same view. Compassion can sometimes be a naive approach – if Islamist terrorists, for instance, were arriving in Canada illegally with the intent of blowing up Jewish and Christian targets, would you want to protect their rights too? There is a point where common sense must prevail. We all want to see legal immigration of people who want to improve their lives and fit in to the Canadian system – not those who want to come here to engage in illegal activity or terrorism or those with an agenda of hate and a desire to convert us to their perverse views from the dark ages.

“it is wise for the Canadian government to find out the source of the problem and address it.”

Forget about it. Not our problem; it’s a cultural issue and it’s Hungary and Hungary’s alone to address.

    Kenney for Prime Minister!

TerrorisEvil’s comments about legal and illegal immigrants are confusing to me. Canada has legal immigrants who have been approved and enter Canada as permanent residents and can apply for citizenship after the required amount of time and test, etc. Then we have REFUGEE CLAIMANTS, who arrive and declare that they claim refugee status. These are NOT “illegal immigrants”. These are people who say they are refugees under the terms of the UN’s definition of what a refugee is. Canada abides by that deffinintion, but must determne the validity of the claim via a hearing before one of the Refugee Determination Boards (actual name may be different). In the past, while all this was in process, the claimants were permitted to work, could apply for welfare, received medical care via the Interim Federal Health Program (IFHP) that covered all medical care including medications, vision and dental care, and the children (if any) could attend school. Now things are different because of Kenney-Harper-the-Cons passage of Bill C-31 reforming the Immigration Act, and the earlier changes to the IFHP (done via anti-democratic Order In Council). So now those claiming refugee status “now only have access to doctors and hospital services if it is an urgent or emergency situation [and] medications now are only covered if they are needed to prevent or treat a disease that is a public health risk” like hep C or swine flu. Regular health care and meds are no longer covered – not even for children, not even for someone who gets a heart attack, etc. (Meagan Fitzpatrick, CBC News, Posted: Jul 31/12). There’s only one exception, and that is for government-assisted refugees, such as the interpreters who worked with the Canadian forces in Afganistan and were given government supported refugee status if they chose to come to Canada because they felt their lives would be in danger should they stay in Afganistan. To make things even more complicated, Bill C-31 introduced the concept of “safe” countries, from which refugee claimants would have a much more difficult time making a case that they truly were refugees. And if they are turned down, they cannot appeal to the Refugee Board, though they can appeal to the Federal Court. However, the fact is they will be deported BEFORE their case comes before the FC – a bizarre Con twist if there ever was one! The minister can list whichever countries he wants to designate as “safe”, with no need to prove anything to anyone. Thus when he published his list just a few days ago, guess what? Yes, Hungary was on it, despite the cumulating evidence from all news and human rights sources that Hungary’s extremist right-wing parties’ (like the Jobbik Party which won 17% in the last parliamentary election and founded the Hungarian Guard, a strong ‘on the street’ militia group) supporters have been puting the lives of Roma AND JEWS in danger. There is extreme racism, with violent attacks and even murders. I hope this cl;arifies the actual situation for you and other readers. What Kenney and the Cons have done caused the Toronto Board of Rabbis to send a strong letter of protest to Harper – not the organization that one usually hears from in censoring government actions. And when the rabbis were castigated by Con supporters in the Jewish leadership, the Globe & Mail contacted Elie Wiesel about the whole thing. The G&M reported (July 7) that he wrote back: ““As a former refugee, together with the Toronto Board of Rabbis, I feel
morally compelled to remain on the side of other uprooted men and women
everywhere. Today, as yesterday, a nation is judged by its
attitude towards refugees,” But Harper and Kenney were and have remained unmoved by all of this. The health aspects have been condemned by physicians right across Canada, who even went out on demonstrations about it. The Cons have been unmoved. And Ezra Levant’s raging and ranting is being taken to the Human Rights Commission by the Roma Community!

Delta: You are the hatemonger (not Ezra) due to ignorance and a misunderstanding of the issues. You ought to be open to the views of others and willing to discuss rather than accuse. In Canada we are tainted by the one-sided and selective leftism of CBC reporting and when another point-of-view is expressed and new facts introduced (hidden to us by the CBC) some people cannot cope.

  • TerrorIsEvil

Borukh: So what do we do about terrorists, criminals and human traffickers entering Canada? Is it fine with you provided they claim to be victims and that you, the CBC and leftists find so compelling? Do you think that because it not your personal problem, that you are not paying the bill and it is not weighing on your conscience that everyone should suffer and be endangered?
