CJN wins Rockower Award

The American Jewish Press Association (AJPA) has recognized The CJN with a first-place Simon Rockower Award for excellence in editorial writing in 2013.

The paper submitted three editorials by Mordechai Ben-Dat for consideration: “Strengthen our unity” (Jan. 3, 2013), “Summit on Education” (Feb. 14) and “Renewing our vows” (May 14).

The first dealt with the issue of accommodating non-Orthodox prayer at the Western Wall, while the second spoke of the need for the community to convene a summit to deal with the high cost of Jewish education. The third urged Jewish leaders to continue to strengthen the infrastructure of communal life, pointing to the need for adequate Jewish education for all children and the importance of maintaining The CJN as a community newspaper.

The AJPA is planning to hold its 2014 annual conference in conjunction with the Jewish Federations of North America’s General Assembly in Washington D.C., Nov. 9 to 11.
