MONTREAL – Luciano Del Negro, who has been the Centre for Israel and Jewish Affairs’ (CIJA) senior professional in Quebec since the advocacy organization’s founding, has left the post.

His departure as Quebec vice-president after a decade was announced earlier this month.

“His strategic leadership, particularly during times of crisis, such as the Second Lebanon War and three Gaza campaigns, have had an enduring and positive impact on Israel’s standing within Quebec,” said CIJA Quebec co-chair Patrick Benaroche.

CIJA Quebec co-chair Rabbi Reuben Poupko, who worked with Del Negro, commented on Del Negro’s accomplishments in building ties with Quebec society.

“Luciano’s reach extended well beyond his passion and commitment to the welfare of the Jewish state,” he said. “His outreach to the mosaic of communities and cultures within Quebec helped cement an unrivalled network that advanced the work of CIJA and generated significant benefits to those with whom he engaged.

“Luciano’s efforts with the Burundi community, with refugees and new immigrants… reaffirmed the Jewish community as a leading player in the broader social justice movement.”

CIJA chief executive officer Shimon Fogel noted Del Negro’s deft handling of thorny political issues, such as the debate over Quebec’s proposed charter of values and the local boycott, divestment and sanctions campaign against Israel. He also applauded his efforts to achieve a unanimous National Assembly resolution celebrating Israel’s 60th anniversary in 2008.

Del Negro expressed his appreciation to the community leadership for the trust they placed in him.

“It has been a great privilege to have led a team of the most passionate, devoted and effective professionals,” he said. “The success and tears I have shared with my colleagues have created a bond for life and the cause to which I have pledged myself has been the source of great meaning and fulfilment.”

Del Negro will continue to serve as an ex-officio member of the CIJA Quebec Local Partner Council.
