Stephen Schacter, a former teacher at a number of Toronto-area Jewish schools, pleaded not guilty to possessing child pornography.

Schacter, 56, was arrested and charged with one count of possessing child pornography in December 2015, after he was seen viewing images on a computer at an employment and social services centre several weeks earlier.

Schacter was a teacher at Eitz Chaim Schools from 1986 to 2004. He also worked with students in the school’s library.

He was an office administrator, student supervisor and supply teacher at United Synagogue Day School (now Robbins Hebrew Academy) from 2004 to 2006.

He was also a primary teacher’s assistant at Pleasant Avenue Public School in 2004, and worked as a private tutor from 2009 until 2011.

Schacter’s trial on the child pornography charge continues on Feb. 1.

Schacter also faces several sex-related charges, including sexual assault, sexual interference, sexual exploitation and gross indecency, in a separate trial. Some of the charges relate to the early 2000s, and others to the 1980s and early ’90s.

His trial on those charges is expected to begin in the summer.
