EDMONTON — The Jewish Community Centre of Edmonton will get a $1-million federal infrastructure grant to help it demolish and rebuild its current facility, the Edmonton Journal reported. A spokesperson said the Jewish Federation of Edmonton is finalizing construction and financial details for the multimillion-dollar centre and hopes to “move ahead” in the spring. The economic stimulus grant will come from the $500-million Recreational Infrastructure Canada program, which will invest in facilities across Canada over two years.

Protesters Square Off

TORONTO — Some 200 pro-Israel ralliers faced off Dec. 27 against a similar number of anti-Israel protesters in noisy but peaceful gatherings outside the Israeli Consulate in Toronto. The two sides stood on opposite sides of Bloor Street, separated by police, Sun Media reported. The anti-Israel protesters were there to support a “Gaza Freedom March” on Dec. 31 in Cairo, as well as to mark the one-year anniversary of the start of the war in Gaza.
