Too soon? Israel Hayom drew the ire of many Israelis after comparing Orlando massacre shooter Omar Mateen to Nashat Milhem, the Israeli Arab terrorist who terrorized a Tel Aviv bar on New Year’s Day 2016. The publication ran photos of the men alongside the caption “Chilling resemblance” following Saturday’s attack in Orlando. Israelis were quick to turn Israel Hayom’s comparison into a meme, of course, with one likening the media outlet to a roll of toilet paper.

So what do Canadians think of Bibi? As the Israeli prime minister welcomes Avigdor Liberman into an expanded coalition government, local pundits and experts have weighed in on his appointment, with some calling the PM’s move highly political and a plot to sure his own “political survival.” Others, like B’nai Brith Canada CEO Michael Mostyn, are optimistic the coalition will give the government the security it needs to move toward a peace agreement.

And it only took 67 years. For the first time since it joined the UN in 1949, Israel finally has been chosen to head a permanent committee of the world body. Danny Danon, Israel’s ambassador to the United Nations, was elected chairman of the UN Legal Committee on Monday. Danon said that Iran, the Palestinians and other nations tried to stop the appointment.

Subtle, overwhelming bias. Honest Reporting notes that a photo posted by AFP/Getty Images shows a “total ignorance of basic history” and blames Israel for surviving the 1967 Six-Day war. The photo, of an Israeli soldier praying at the Kotel, neglects to mention that the war was a defensive one where Israel was forced to fight for its survival. It also neglects to mention that Eastern Jerusalem, which Israel obtained in the ‘67 war, had previously been occupied by Jordan.

“Jordan ignored Israeli pleas to stay out of the war, and instead used its occupation of eastern Jerusalem as a base from which to pound Israel with rockets and  ground forces. Had Jordan not forced Israel to defend its very existence, Jordan would very likely still be in control of eastern Jerusalem today,” writes Honest Reporting.

Architects recreate a Nazi gas chamber. Currently on display at a Venice exhibit is a recreation of a Nazi gas chamber which hopes to honour the victims of the Holocaust. The inception for the exhibit came after historian Deborah Lipstadt was sued by Holocaust denier David Irving for libel, and had an architectural historian help her case by proving the genocidal intent of Nazi concentration camps and gas chambers. That evidence was compiled to reconstruct such a gas chamber which may be ‘nightmarish’ to look at, but succeeds in proving to naysayers that the Nazis did, indeed, attempt to wipe us all out.

Israeli rhapsody. Last week the Jewish media was inundated with rumours that Queen and its new frontman Adam Lambert would be making their way to Israel for the band’s first performance in the Holy Land. Now, the Jerusalem Post reports that said rumours were true: the band will play Tel Aviv on Sept. 12. “I am excited to perform with Queen in Tel Aviv for the first time, and we’re looking forward to giving everyone a show to remember,” Lambert said.

Alice Cooper stoked for Israel. Alice Cooper is playing Israel in a few days, but he’s already making his way to the Holy Land as he can barely maintain his excitement, reportedly. “I’m coming to Israel early because I want to see the Holy Land,” the 68-year-old told the Jerusalem Post in a recent interview. “Being Christian, I want to see where all of this history actually happened. My wife’s father is a Baptist pastor and he organized Holy Land tours, so my wife has been to Israel three times. She told me, ‘You’re going to love it there.’” You sure are, Alice. Enjoy it.
