Head Full Of Hebrew

ORLANDO — One of the top defenders in the NBA had the word “defence” inscribed in his hair in Hebrew, as well as in Japanese and Hindi. Ron Artest, a forward for the Los Angeles Lakers, dyed his hair blond and had the word haganah shaved and dyed in purple in his hair to match the team’s colours for a March 7 game against the Orlando Magic in Florida. There was no word on whether Artest’s Jewish teammate, Jordan Farmar, offered any input into the decision.

Lox Ban ‘A Lie’

NEW YORK — The organization that reportedly banned lox as unkosher says the media fabricated the story. “They made it up,” Yisroel Neiman, a member of Chevra Mehadrin, told “It’s a lie. We never said lox wasn’t kosher.” The Monsey, N.Y.-based group of haredi rabbis made news last week when it reportedly declared smoked salmon unkosher because of the presence of a parasitic worm. The fishy story was picked up by a number of news outlets, even though the Orthodox Union declared the ban unjustified.

Ralliers Slur General

NEW YORK — Hundreds of protesters marched in front of a New York City hotel where Israel’s military chief of staff was speaking at a dinner. Lt.-Gen. Gabi Ashkenazi called on the international community to stop Iran’s nuclear program in his address March 9 at the Waldorf-Astoria. The dinner was hosted by the Friends of the Israel Defence Forces. Outside, some 500 protesters carried signs reading “From the River to the Sea, Palestine Will Be Free,” “Israel Is a Terrorist State,” “No More U.S. Tax Dollars for Israel” and “Nuremberg Justice For Israeli War Criminals.” Some 25 U.S., Jewish and Israeli groups took part. About 100 pro-Israel demonstrators gathered across the street.
