Soap Tests Negative

MONTREAL — A bar of soap said to be made from the fat of Holocaust victims that was for sale in a Montreal curio shop doesn’t contain human remains, police said last week. The bar, engraved with a swastika, was sent for testing at an Ontario lab, which found no human DNA, Canadian Press reported. The shop’s Jewish owner, Abraham Botines, said he got the soap from a Canadian World War II veteran who said it was made from the fat of Nazi camp victims. It was seized after B’nai Brith Canada complained. Police said they’ll return the bar and won’t charge Botines.

Gay Honours Refused

TORONTO — Three gay and lesbian activists have turned down honours from Pride Toronto, citing free speech and Pride’s decision to ban the group Queers Against Israeli Apartheid from marching in this year’s Pride Parade. Michelle Walker, co-founder of the Vancouver Dyke March, declined Pride Toronto’s 2010 community service award, while Dr. Alan Li turned down the grand marshal position, and author and broadcaster Jane Farrow rejected the “honoured dyke” title at the Pride Toronto Dyke March, the gay and lesbian magazine Xtra! reported. In a letter to Pride Toronto, Farrow said that the issue isn’t about Mideast politics. “It simply comes down to protecting the right to free speech.”
