Alexis Wronzberg – the 27-year-old with acute lymphoblastic leukemia who is getting potentially life-saving treatment at Tel Aviv’s Ichilov Hospital – received a bone marrow and stem cell transplant from her mother Debra this week.

The haploidentical transplant followed six days of chemotherapy aimed at reducing the level of the disease, which recurred for the second time Sept. 28.

The $300,000 cost of the treatment was raised through an urgent fundraising campaign by family and friends, and doctors at Toronto’s Princess Margaret Hospital provided the treatment necessary for her to fly to Israel.

Alexis is expected to have to remain in Israel for a total of three months.

“All is moving along,” her father Rick told The CJN in an e-mail from Israel, where he joined his wife and daughter last week. “Next is waiting for engraftment over next few weeks and avoid infections.”
