MONTREAL — A group of Grade 6 students from Hebrew Foundation School (HFS) in Dollard des Ormeaux, will represent the only Jewish day school to take part in the Remembrance Day ceremony at the War Museum in Ottawa.

Maya Assouline, Harley Belfer, Cooper Frank, Lauren Rosenthal, Raquel Simon and Ronnie Szyk were selected to make the trip based on their written submissions on the meaning of Remembrance Day.

“You risked your life for our freedom, armed only with a gun and determination. You fought the enemy, and with your fear, too, all for the liberty of the nation,” wrote Lauren.

In his poem titled July 28, 1914, Cooper wrote: “Returning home feeling barely alive, thinking of the others who didn’t survive. War changes a man in a way you wouldn’t understand. The past is a tragedy but the future is in your hands.”

In addition, the Student Council of HFS recognized the contribution of Canadian veterans by initiating a fundraising drive for Operation Veteran, an organization that ensures that veterans receive meal coupons to eat at the War Museum.

Families were given brown paper bags and asked to bring their lunches to work and to donate the money they would have spent on buying a meal to this cause.

The six selected students will present the cheque to Operation Veteran as part of the ceremony in Ottawa.
