RENOWNED PIANIST

Renowned jazz pianist Lorraine Desmarais, with bassist Frédéric Alarie and drummer Camil Bélisle, will play the intimate Segal Centre Studio as part of its Power Jazz Series, 8 p.m. The event is co-sponsored by the centre and Power Corp. Last month, Desmarais won the Opus Prize as performer of the year.

J.I. SEGAL BOOK LAUNCH

University of Ottawa academic Pierre Anctil, a Québécois devotee of Yiddish who speaks the language fluently and garnered the J.I. Segal Award in 2012, launches his book, Jacob-Isaac Segal 1896-1954: un poète yiddish de Montréal et son milieu, 7 p.m., the Jewish Public Library. SAVE APRIL 14, TOO!

The hugely popular Cummings Jewish Centre for Seniors Foundation Sports Celebrity Breakfast takes place April 14 and will honour the legendary Roy Salomon for decades of work in harnessing Canadian and international support for, and participation in, the Maccabiah Games in Israel. The annual breakfast, which always draws a crowd of 600 and is co-chaired by Michael Wagen and Bram Naimer, also draws dozens from the  local sports and sports media world and will honour National Hockey League Player’s Association executive director Donald Fehr, who will be present, as sports personality of the year. JGH HEART HEALTH

As part of February Heart Health Month, the Jewish General Hospital is joining forces to raise awareness by encouraging a heart-healthy lifestyle, including regular physical activity, healthy eating, keeping blood pressure in check, quitting smoking, limiting alcohol intake, reducing stress and maintaining a healthy weight. The JGH has a Cardiovascular Prevention Centre offering resources to those ends. A new study of about 400 patients by JGH Lady Davis Institute cardiologist Dr. Mark Eisenberg revealed that two-thirds of middle aged smokers who suffered heart attacks resumed smoking within a year after their infarctions.

SILCOFF AWARDS

Montreal’s Silcoff Events Inc. last month garnered two Gala Awards at the Special Event 2013 event in Chicago. The categories were best event produced for a non-profit organization and best decor (for the 2012 Daffodil Ball, the Canadian Cancer Society’s annual gala). The Gala Awards are considered the “Oscars” for the global special events industry and featured entries from many countries, including Israel, the United Kingdom, China, the United States and Russia.
