MARCH FUNDRAISER

A fundraiser is being held at the Samuel Moskovitch Arena in Cote St. Luc to help subsidize individuals who want to go on the March of the Living but can’t afford it. Deborah Dunn’s latest dance creation, Orlando, is based on the world of Virginia Woolf and can be seen free, 8 p.m. at the Segal Centre. ROMANIAN HOLOCAUST

Last month, students at Talmud Torah elementary school commemorated Romanian victims of the Holocaust at an event spearheaded by survivor Baruch Cohen and Beth Israel Beth Aaron Congregation’s Rabbi Reuben Poupko, in the effort to pass the torch to the future generations.

SHABBAT COOKING

Federation CJA Tikkun Olam Volunteers (TOV) in the West Island rolled up their sleeves last month for a Shabbat Cooking Program (launched in 2011) that provided Shabbat meals for underprivileged families in the area, said chair Dania Besnos. They used the Congregation Beth Tikvah kitchen to prepare the meals with a team led by Ruth Levitsky.

Loris Lesynski and Michael Martchenko, respective author and illustrator of Boy Soup, visited Akiva School last month to read and talk about their work to grade 1 and 2 students during their Canada-wide book tour and as part of the TD Grade 1 Book Giveaway, which distributes 100,000 free books to kids across Quebec to encourage children’s literacy.

HERZLIAH STUDENTS ROCK!

Herzliah High School recently presented Chai Awards to 123 students who scored 85 per cent or higher in their Judaic and general studies during the 2012-13 school year. Guest speaker at the event was Jason Caron (class of ’88), vice-president of the Centre for Israel and Jewish Affairs in Quebec.

INCUBATOR CO-CHAIRS

The recent CJN article on raising funds for new incubators at the Jewish General Hospital misstated the names of the project’s co-chairs. They are actually Rhona Daitchman and Roz Rinzler.

HASHOMER HATZAIR

The revived Hashomer Hatzair in Montreal began its activities this fall with two programs, including a memorial for former Israeli prime minister Yitzhak Rabin that drew 60 people. NO STOCK IN STOCKINGS

A multi-centre clinical trial led by Dr. Susan Kahn at the Jewish General Hospital’s Lady Davis Institute found that patients who use elastic compression stockings for two years after a deep vein thrombosis (DVT) were no less likely to experience post-thrombotic syndrome (PTS) than patients using a placebo stocking. PTS symptoms include pain, itching, swelling, varicose veins, discoloration, and ulcers. Pressure stockings were never previously subjected to a placebo-controlled clinical trial. The study’s findings were published in The Lancet.

On Dec. 7, CJN reporter Elias Levy was to be honoured with a plaque at Congregation Or Hahayim in recognition of the  high calibre of his articles covering the Sephardi world… Last month, Dollard des Ormeaux mayor Ed Janiszewski convened a special council meeting to extend a tribute to Rabbi Mordecai Zeitz and his wife, Charlotte, for his 49 years of service to Beth Tikvah synagogue. It was the first such proclamation since Prime Minister Stephen Harper visited DDO three years ago… Bialik High School vice-principal Marnie Stein has been named principal of Jewish People and Peretz School as of July 2014, succeeding Adina Matas.
