HOOPSTERS FOR DANIEL

YM-YWHA Wolves Basketball players have been all there for 14-year-old teammate and friend Daniel, a Bantam AA player diagnosed with lymphoma. Although his friends were upset by the news, they have gone all out for Daniel, checking in with him daily while coach Mitch Frank lets him give pre-game speeches. On Feb. 9, “Showcase Day,” involving games against other league competition, Wolves players wrote one-word support messages for Daniel, such as “hope,” believe,” love,” and “faith.” Meanwhile, the juvenile basketball girls team came up with an 10-word message of support: “You’re part of our pack so we’ve got your back.” Midget AA captain Benji Bercovitch said: “It was a special day for a special kid.” The Wolves consist of players 10 to 17 and compete in Montreal and the Metropolitan Basketball League.

 

HOOPS TOURNEY

The Frisch School of New Jersey defeated SAR Academy of Riverdale, N. Y., to emerge victorious at the five team, six-game 19th Oren Grunbaum Invitational Basketball Tournament, at Hebrew Academy (HA) Feb. 5-9. The two other competing schools were École Maïmonide and North Shore Hebrew Academy High School of  Great Neck, N.Y. The weekend also included an award banquet and Shabbat program. Grunbaum was an HA graduate who died in 1995.
