FREEDOM FIGHTER
Rev. Majed El Shafie, a Christian minister arrested, tortured and sentenced to die in Egypt because of his faith before his release a year and a half later (he now lives in Canada), takes part in an evening that includes the screening of a documentary on the subject, 7:30 p.m. at Congregation Beth-El, in conjunction with One Free World International. Today, Rev. El Shafie fights for those who are persecuted as well as against antisemitism, travelling the world on missions to investigate and document human rights abuses against religious minorities, especially in Egypt, Pakistan, Afghanistan, Iraq, and China. TIKKUN OLAM VOLUNTEERS
On Jan. 26, Tikkun Olam Volunteers (TOV) of West Island Federation CJA cooked and delivered Shabbat meals to seven needy families as part of a pilot project overseen by Rochelle Lerner Silverman. The project may expand to include monthly Shabbat deliveries and holiday meals. It’s estimated that 12 per cent of West Island Jews, who number 14,000, live below the poverty line. The West Island is one of the fastest growing Jewish communities in North America and the second largest in Montreal.
