The Toronto Jewish Film Festival has announced it intends to honour the special time of reflection between Rosh Hashanah and Yom Kippur by presenting a screening of the Israeli documentary The Hangman (2010), directed by Netalie Braun.
The film is a complex and unforgettable portrait of the marginalized Sephardi prison warden who became Adolf Eichmann’s executioner. Forever affected by this event, he eventually becomes a shochet and performs the ceremony of kapparot before Yom Kippur, assisting others with their atonement.
Rabbi Elyse Goldstein is a guest speaker at the screening, which is being co-presented by the Ashkenaz Festival. Hebrew with English subtitles. The film contains some graphic imagery. Varsity Cinema, Wednesday, Sept. 19, 7:30 p.m. www.tjff.com or 416-324-9121.
