Thank you for this articulate and poetic truth-telling. I too fell into a deep sadness, and it has not left me since. I work at a small humanitarian organization in Vancouver that assists and accompanies refugee claimants, and in the past 7 years 50% of the refugees we work with have gotten deported. It was bad enough as it was, now it will be more likely near 65 or 70%. May God protect them as they get sent back into the lion’s den.

Thanks for your essay.  I also work with refugee claimants and there is nothing good about Bill C-31.  I used to be angry about it, but now, just sad and defeated.  It is no longer a question of what is happening to canada, but rather, what happened to Canada.  The change is complete, the new regime has its victory, at least for the moment.
Canada: the cruelest country in the Western Hemisphere.

  • I fully agree with the author’s sentiments. Canada should change its political system to 1) a co-oalition government  2) The prime minister should be elected by the majority vote of all Canadians. not by the number of candidates of the party he represents  One vote for the prime minister and one vote for your local representatives, both federal and provincial in any election. In the last election,. more Canadians voted against Harper than for him but he was elected anyway. 2) The senate should be appointed not by the ruling government but by a selection committee composed of equal number of  members from all the political parties. All of this will ensure the continuation of democracy in Canada and not a one party dictatorship. We currently have a right-wing rigue government that is detrimental to the Canadian democracy and the values we have struggled to create.

  • The Conservative government must be held responsible for the results of Bill C-31 and any deaths that occur because of this denial of vital medical services to refugee claiments. Canada is still a signatory of the 1951 Geneva Convention on Refugees.
