MONTREAL — The Segal Centre for Performing Arts is presenting the second edition of its Women of the World music series, featuring Montreal female singers.
The lineup includes Coral Egan, Florence K, Natalie Choquette and Térez Montcalm, who are all making their Segal debut.
“This series showcases the artistic and cultural richness that has given Montreal an international reputation,” said Segal chief executive officer Manon Gauthier. “Featuring artists from diverse cultural backgrounds and based in Montreal, Women of the World celebrates the vibrant multicultural landscape of today’s Québec.”
Shows are held in the Studio at 7:30 p.m.
Egan, known for her rich and sensuous voice, launches the series Jan. 26. The daughter of singer Karen Young, Egan’s first album, The Path of Least Resistance, came out in 2002 and launched her career across Canada as well as internationally.
The album earned her a Juno nomination for jazz vocal album of the year. In 2004, she won a Félix Award for My Favorite Distraction. www.myspace.com/coralegan
Florence K follows on March 1 with her warm blend of genres and cultural influences. Like Egan, she follows in the footsteps of her musician mother, Natalie Choquette.
Despite her youth, Florence K already has two well-received albums to her credit as well as two Félix Awards for album of the year in the world music category. www.florencek.com
Choquette, an operatic soprano, performs March 29, in her comic diva persona. She has performed around the world and recorded more than 10 albums over the course of her long career, including a DVD with Charles Dutoit, former artistic director of the Orchestre Symphonique de Montréal. www.nataliechoquette.ca
Montcalm closes the series April 19. Since the 2006 launch of her career, she has risen rapidly on the jazz circuit and is especially popular in France.
Her first album Voodoo, entirely in French, has sold more than 70,000 copies since 2007. Recently, she released an homage to American jazz singer Shirley Horn titled Here’s to You.
“Rarely in concert in Quebec, this is an excellent opportunity to experience an amazing talent in the intimacy and warmth of the Segal Centre Studio,” said Gauthier. www.vegamusique.com/terez_montcalm
