FILM ABOUT SUICIDE
The documentary, The Hidden Face of Suicide by Yehudit Silverman, has its North American theatrical premiere at the Montreal World Film Festival at the NFB Theatre, 1564 St. Denis St., at 7:30 p.m. with French subtitles. It’s shown again Sept. 4 at 9:30 p.m. Silverman is an associate professor of creative arts therapies at Concordia University. The film, which features interviews with those who have lost loved ones to suicide, seeks to end the silence surrounding this subject. Silverman and the survivors will be present at the screenings. MAIMONIDES COOKBOOK
Cooking With Love, a collection of over 150 recipes of family favourites, has been published by Maimonides Geriatric Centre in honour of its 100th anniversary, The co-editors Tina Abbey, Cheryl Levy and Denise Zunenshine have selected recipes that have often been passed down through generations, and have infused them with a modern flair. Each recipe is accompanied by photos. Proceeds from the sale of the cookbook will benefit Maimonides residents.

The Segal Centre for Performing Arts hosted for the second year, a Free the Children concert, which is raising funds to build an arts school in Kenya. The show, presented by Unlimited Masterpeace, featured over 50 musicians, singers and dancers from popular musicals like Les Misérables and Un violon sur le toit. Founded in 1995 by Canadian child rights activist Craig Kielburger, Free the Children is described as the world’s largest network of children helping children through education.
MAKE IT A DATE
The award winning documentary Budrus, about a Palestinian village’s peaceful resistance to Israel’s security barrier is shown at Cinéma du Parc Sept. 11 and 12 at 7 p.m. This American/Israeli/ Palestinian film is co-produced by Montreal native Ronit Avni, who will be present at a question period after the screenings. Budrus has won eight international prizes, including audience awards at the Berlin and San Francisco International Film Festivals…The sixth annual Lila Sigal Marathon Hockey Tournament, benefiting the McGill Cancer Nutrition Rehabilitation Program at the Jewish General Hospital takes place Sept. 11 from 10 a.m. to midnight at the Samuel Moskovitch Arena in Côte St. Luc. Four teams of 12 players, raising a minimum of $1,000 each, will play non-stop through the day. Co-chaired by Farrell Miller, owner of the Montreal Juniors, and David Sigal, the tournament honours the memory of Sigal’s mother who died from pancreatic cancer in 2004.
Boaz Davidoff, who was cantor for six years, until recently, at Shaare Zion Congregation, returns to Montreal to give a concert at Oscar Peterson Hall Sept. 15 at 7:30 p.m. Now living in his native Israel, in Haifa, Davidoff is also launching Open Your Heart, a CD of songs of the late Rabbi Shlomo Carlebach, created with the assistance of Michael Ruben.
Davidoff will perform selections from the recording, as well as other Jewish, Israeli and world beat songs, backed by a full band. Joining him on stage will be the show’s producer Ian Cooney, as accompanist and back-up singer…
Sixteen-year-old singer Nikki Yanofsky made her Israeli debut in a concert at Eilat’s Red Sea Jazz Festival Aug. 23. She toured in Europe this summer, and is planning a 16-city U.S. tour this fall…Vehicule Press will publish an “updated and expanded” edition of Bill Brownstein’s Schwartz’s Hebrew Delicatessen: The Story in October. This history of the colourful characters associated with the smoked-meat emporium will have a new cover, more photos and a new chapter on Jean Béliveau, a loyal customer. The publication ties in with Schwartz’s: The Musical, based on Brownstein’s book and written by Bowser & Blue, which makes its world premiere at Centaur Theatre in March…
Local artist Carol Rabinovitch’s work is on display at the Eleanor London Côte St. Luc Public Library until Sept. 19 in an exhibit called Swirls and Whirls.
