Chanukah

HURRICANE SANDY
Several local Jewish schools and groups took part in relief efforts for victims of Hurricane Sandy, including Solomon Schechter Academy, which has a namesake school in Long Island, N.Y., and took part in a recent conference call together; the Akiva School, which sent more than 70 boxes of books, educational games, toys, backpacks and school supplies, and Chabad-Lubavitch.
RUSSIAN CULTURE SOIRÉE
Last month’s seventh annual Evening of Russian Culture at the Jewish Public Library, sponsored by Barbara and Ronny Kay, was called a great success, drawing more than 420 people who enjoyed top-tier Russian-trained singers and dancers, and food.
LIFE & RHYMES
Self-described “very senior” Montrealer and retired child psychologist Margie Golick recently published a new book, The Life and Rhymes of a Jewish Mother, a collection of more than 50 years of light verse first written for friends and family and now being well received by the public. City councillor Lionel Perez became interim mayor by acclimation of Cote-de-Neiges – Notre-Dame-de-Grace borough after Michael Applebaum shed that title earlier to become interim mayor of Montreal following the resignation of Gerald Tremblay. Perez. a former member of Union Montreal, had the borough title sewn up after Snowdon district councillor Marvin Rotrand declined to run.
