YIDDISH CONFERENCE

The Bibliothèque et Archives nationales du Québec stages a French-language evening devoted to the legacy of Yiddish Montreal, 7 p.m. at the Grande Bibliothèque 475 Blvd. de Maisonneuve E. with participants Pierre Anctil, Rivka Augenfeld and Dominique Poirier. Chanukah

 

The Jewish community has many Chanukah events to choose from, with chanukiyah-lighting and latkes at virtually all of them. The ones we heard about by deadline started with a Dec. 6, 1:30 p.m. annual Chanukah celebration by the Creative Social Centre, 5237 Clanranald Ave. (514-484-0907);

On Dec. 8, 7 p.m., the evening of the first candle, the Russian Jewish community celebrates Chanukah with an evening of classical music at École Vincent-d’Indy, 625 Cote Ste. Catherine Rd. (RSVP, 514-573-7282).

Also on Dec. 8, 6:30-8:30 p.m. the West Island JCC at 13101 Gouin Blvd. stages its first Chanukah Pyjama Party (RSVP, Shelley Fishko, 514-624-6750, ext. 21).

CHANUKAH DANCE

HURRICANE SANDY

Several local Jewish schools and groups took part in relief efforts for victims of Hurricane Sandy, including Solomon Schechter Academy, which has a namesake school in Long Island, N.Y., and took part in a recent conference call together; the Akiva School, which sent more than 70 boxes of books, educational games, toys, backpacks and school supplies, and Chabad-Lubavitch.

RUSSIAN CULTURE SOIRÉE

Last month’s seventh annual Evening of Russian Culture at the Jewish Public Library, sponsored by Barbara and Ronny Kay, was called a great success, drawing more than 420 people who enjoyed top-tier Russian-trained singers and dancers, and food.

 

LIFE & RHYMES

Self-described “very senior” Montrealer and retired child psychologist Margie Golick recently published a new book, The Life and Rhymes of a Jewish Mother, a collection of more than 50 years of light verse first written for friends and family and now being well received by the public. The official launch took place Dec. 4 at Temple Emanu-El-Beth Sholom. She can be reached at 514-935-9340.

City councillor Lionel Perez became interim mayor by acclimation of Cote-de-Neiges – Notre-Dame-de-Grace borough after Michael Applebaum shed that title earlier to become interim mayor of Montreal following the resignation of Gerald Tremblay. Perez. a former member of Union Montreal, had the borough title sewn up after Snowdon district councillor Marvin Rotrand declined to run.
