Wasted Wine: The LCBO has ordered vendors to stop selling wines labelled as “Product of Israel” if they’re manufactured in the West Bank. In a letter announcing the new policy, the board said the Canadian Food Inspection Agency specifically mentioned the Pisgat Winery north of Jerusalem and the Shiloh Winery. B’nai Brith Canada believes the agency will soon rescind the order.

United States

Catch & Release: Alan Gross, an American Jew convicted of threatening the independence and integrity of Cuba, has made aliyah to Israel. Gross spent five years in a Cuban prison.

Trumpian Tactics: Israel and the Palestinian Authority announced an agreement that will create a new desalination plant to seek to replenish the shrinking Dead Sea, and provide 33 million cubic metres of drinking water to Palestinians. The Palestinians maintain such an arrangement has no impact upon final-status negotiations.

American Jewish Conservative, Extinct: A recent Op-Ed in the Forward by Peter Beinart raises the interesting premise that Trump’s ascent will lead to the demise of American Jewish conservatism. In Beinart’s mind, Trump has abandoned fundamental principles prominent among commentators like David Frum and Bret Stephens with regard to issues like international commitments, receptiveness to refugees and promotion of free trade.
