At least 14 people were injured after a suspected terrorist from East Jerusalem rammed his car into a group of pedestrians at a bus stop Monday at the entrance to Jerusalem.

Three of the 14 were injured moderately, including a woman in her 70s and an 18-month-old baby.

According to police, the terrorist, who was shot dead as he attempted to exit his car following the attack, is 21-year-old Abed el-Muhsen Hassuna of the East Jerusalem neighbourhood of Beit Hanina.

Police later discovered an axe in his white Mazda, leading them to believe that he also intended to stab civilians.

Three Israelis who witnessed the attack, including security forces and an armed civilian, shot Hassuna before he was able to exit his car and inflict further harm. They were lauded by Jerusalem District Police Chief Moshe Edri for preventing “a more serious attack.”

Speaking at the scene of the attack, Jerusalem Mayor Nir Barkat urged residents to exercise caution, but at the same time to “go on with your daily routine, and not let the terrorists win.”

Israel’s Channel 2 News reports that doctors are currently attempting to save the 18-month-old victim’s foot, which was reportedly “caught” underneath the attacker’s car, according to his father Binyamin Sitbon. “His condition is more or less good,” he said. “He’ll be okay, God willing.”
