On his official visit to Canada from March 31 to April 2, Israeli President Reuven Rivlin will visit Niagara Falls, join a sing-along and headline a business forum in Toronto.

The visit “marks two very important milestones for the State of Israel,” reads a statement from Israel’s diplomatic mission in Canada. “The first is 70 years of independence and the second is 70 years of bilateral relations between Israel and Canada.”

Rivlin is scheduled to visit Niagara Falls on March 31. That evening, in Toronto, he will be the special guest at a cocktail reception hosted by Canadian Magen David Adom at the Four Seasons Hotel.

In Ottawa, he will meet Governor General Julie Payette on April 1, when an official welcoming ceremony, with military honours, will be held at Rideau Hall. Rivlin will inspect a guard of honour and both he and Payette will deliver remarks. The two will sit down together later that morning.

The president will then plant a blue beech tree on the grounds of Rideau Hall, to commemorate his visit to Canada. “The wood of the blue beech is known for its strength – a reflection of the strong bilateral relationship that exists between Israel and Canada,” reads a statement from the governor general’s office.

A state dinner will take place at Rideau Hall that evening.

He’s also slated to meet Prime Minister Justin Trudeau.

There are three events scheduled for April 2.

Rivlin will host a business forum at the Four Seasons. He will be accompanied by a large business delegation representing a variety of sectors in the Israeli economy, including: health care, financial technology, cybersecurity, smart cities and clean technology.

Called “Canada and Israel: Friends, Colleagues and Economic Partners,” the forum is taking place with the assistance of the Toronto Region Board of Trade. To be attended by firms from both countries, it will highlight Israel’s high-tech sector, while exploring business opportunities in Canada.

“Through ingenuity and investment, Israel has earned the nickname ‘Start-Up Nation.’ It currently boasts the largest number of start-up companies per capita and is ranked as the fifth most innovative country in the world, according to a Bloomberg study,” reads the statement from Israel’s diplomatic mission.

“Israel’s vibrant, energetic and well-educated population makes it an important global centre for the development of groundbreaking new technologies and entrepreneurship.”

Rivlin will then visit Toronto General Hospital’s Peter Munk Cardiac Centre. He will meet with senior hospital staff and be shown a demonstration of new technology that was pioneered in Israel and will soon be available at the hospital.

Later that evening, Rivlin will sing Matisyahu’s hit song “One Day” at the Westin Harbour Castle hotel.

Rivlin will be accompanied by an expected crowd of 1,600, who will sing along with Israeli musical sensation Koolulam.

Rivlin is also scheduled to meet Ontario Premier Doug Ford and Toronto Mayor John Tory while in Toronto.

The last Israeli state visit to Canada was by Rivlin’s predecessor, the late Shimon Peres, in 2012.
