Israeli rower wins bronze medal at Beijing Paralympics

BEIJING — Rower Eli Nawi finished third in the men’s single sculls-A event last week, bringing Israel’s medal count at the Beijing Paralympic Games to four – three silver and one bronze.

He finished in a time of five minutes and 39.11 seconds. The event was making its debut at the Paralympics.

In other results involving Israeli teams, the men’s wheelchair basketball team lost to Great Britain, 82-67, in its final preliminary match. The Israelis finished fourth in Group B with a 2-4 record and advanced to the quarter-finals, where they will meet defending gold medalist Canada.

In wheelchair tennis, Boaz Kramer and Shraga Weinberg advanced to the gold-medal match in mixed doubles-quad with a 6-6, 6-4 semi-finals victory over the second-seeded British pair. The Israelis were to face the top-seeded U.S. team of David Wagner and Nick Taylor.

“I don’t know how to say it. It’s the greatest moment in my life right now,” Kramer told the Olympic News Service.

“Right now we will be celebrating for a couple of hours, and tomorrow morning the first thing is to think about the next match, the gold-medal match,” he said. “I think if we performed as well as today, we will have a chance.”

In the equestrian individual freestyle test final, Omer Ben Dor finished 13th out of 15.
