Spin-a-thon raises thousands for Maccabi team

A spin-a-thon at the Thornhill branch of Extreme Fitness recently raised $6,000 for Maccabi Canada’s under-19 basketball team. The team will compete at the Maccabiah Games in Israel next year.

Organized by Michal Capland, left, the spin-a-thon attracted 58 participants. Capland’s son, Cory, has been named to the under-19 team. Cory has played in previous Maccabi events in Argentina, Rome, New York and Orange County, Calif. A Grade 12 student, Cory also plays basketball for the Anne & Max Tanenbaum Community Hebrew Academy of Toronto, Richmond Hill campus, and is a member of the Bathurst Jewish Community Centre rep team.

The spin-a-thon featured a silent auction, a sporting goods sale and refreshments donated by Bagel Brothers, No Frills and Starbucks. Other sponsors included Uplands Golf and Ski Club, The Israeli Source, Fitness Source, Lululemon Athletica, the Windsor Arms Hotel, Sporting Life, Israel’s Judaica, Tutto Bene Restaurant, Shoppers Drug Mart (Thornhill), Kosher and Natural Foods, and Balloon Bash.
