Your Daily Spiel For June 1

A top IDF official said Israel must take steps to ease the humanitarian crisis in Gaza. The army has recommended that the political echelon should ease the economic pressure on Hamas and allow workers from Gaza to enter Israel. Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu agreed with the assessment.

Israel’s Interior Ministry denied the request of a Ugandan Jew, Kibitz Yosef, to immigrate to Israel. A representative said the decision represented Israel’s stance on the Ugandan Jewish community. Most Ugandan Jews were converted under the auspices of U.S. Conservative rabbis, and are not recognized as Jewish by Israel’s Orthodox Chief Rabbinate.

The Al-Quds Day rally in Toronto, a rally for the “liberation” of Jerusalem, is scheduled for June 9. Jewish advocacy groups have complained in the past that the rallies called for hate and violence against Israel. The march will begin in Queen’s Park North and head south to the U.S. Consulate on University Avenue.

Israel’s Education Ministry is taking disciplinary action against a female high school teacher who admitted to sleeping with her teenage male student, but was never indicted. Police originally determined last year that there was no evidence that the teacher broke the law because she was not his teacher at the time of the affair.
