JNF Award Protested

LONDON, Ont. — Some 100 people demonstrated outside a June 1 Jewish National Fund Negev Dinner honouring the president of the University of Western Ontario. The Canadian Arab Federation, the Palestinian Arab Society of London and the Canadian Arab Society of London protested Paul Davenport’s acceptance of the honour and JNF’s land policies, the London Free Press reported.

Student Income Boost

MONTREAL — Montreal philanthropist Marcel Adams, founder of Iberville Developments, said last month that he will supplement the income of 10 Israeli student scientists funded in U.S. dollars by his Adams Family Foundation, in order to offset the 20 per cent rise in the shekel’s value against the greenback. Adams, an 88-year-old Holocaust survivor, announced the one-time gift in Israel at a meeting of Adams Fellows last month, the Jerusalem Post reported.

Lawyers Honoured

TORONTO — Jewish lawyers make up more than half of the 10 winners of the Law Society of Upper Canada’s 2008 awards. Earl Cherniak, Sidney Troister, Audrey Loeb and Clifford Lax of Toronto, and Abraham Feinstein of Ottawa received the Law Society Medal, the group’s highest honour, on June 5. Toronto’s Morley Wolfe, a former president of B’nai Brith Canada, won the Lincoln Alexander Award, named for the former Ontario lieutenant-governor and given for outstanding public service.
