Watchdog Criticizes Radio-Canada

MONTREAL — The pro-Israel media watchdog Honest Reporting Canada protested Radio-Canada’s airing of what it calls a “pro-Palestinian advocacy film.”
The film Peace, Propaganda and the Promised Land: U.S. Media and the Israeli-Palestinian Conflict, made by the U.S.-based Media EducationFoundation, a left-leaning documentary producer based in Northhampton, Mass., was broadcast Oct. 23 on CBC’s French network.
“By airing a film rife with false premises, serious omissions and unfounded malicious allegations, the network not only misinformed Canadians about the politics and history of the Middle East, it also breached its own journalistic standards and practices by airing a one-sided partisan polemic bent on vilifying a fellow democracy, the State of Israel,” said Honest Reporting director Mike Fegelman.
Radio-Canada assistant ombudsman Laure Simonet in a letter said the complaint has been forwarded to Luce Julien, senior director of news and current affairs, who was responsible for the programming.

‘Three-peat’ for Gray

WINNIPEG — For the third straight year, a teacher at Gray Academy of Jewish Education – Winnipeg’s main kindergarten to Grade 12 Jewish day school  – has won a Grinspoon-Steinhardt Award for Excellence in Jewish Education. Grade 5 and 6 Judaic studies teacher Shery Wolfe-Elazar received the prize, given out since 2000 by the U.S.-based Jewish Education Service of North America and sponsored by the Grinspoon Foundation and the Jewish Life Network/Steinhardt Foundation. Gray teachers Rochelle Gamliel and Joyce Kerr also won in 2006, while Anat Ekhoiz and Carol Leszcz won in 2007.
