JCT to honour federal cabinet minister

TORONTO —An Israeli college that educates using a unique blend of rigorous academic, scientific and religious studies is set to honour Canada’s Minister of Citizenship, Immigration and Multiculturalism, Jason Kenney.

On March 27, the Canadian Friends of the Jerusalem College of Technology will host its Gala Evening of Appreciation at the New Ritz-Carlton in Toronto and bestow upon Kenney the title of honorary dean of academic achievement.

According to the college, which was established in 1969, it’s an institution that serves more than 3,500 students who “combine their academic studies with intensive study of Jewish law and literature, emphasizing ethical values, moral discipline, and the synthesis of tradition with modernity.”

The college is in the midst of building a new $60-million Jerusalem campus for its women’s college, and developing new degree programs in adaptive micro-optics and nano-optics, architecture, social work, water and solar engineering, and applied physics, according to gala literature.

In a statement prior to the dinner, gala chair, Larry Zeifman, said the college is “thrilled” to be honouring  Kenney and through him, the entire Canadian government for its “steadfast and staunch support of Israel.”

He added that in the current turmoil of today’s Middle East “Israel has no better friend than Canada, and we need to thank Minister Kenney for this. Support of this dinner is a fine way to do that. Today’s tumultuous times remind us that Canada has no greater friend in the region than Israel. Jerusalem College of Technology and its graduates contribute to this bond.”

Canadian Friends of Jerusalem College of Technology said the institution is “one of the fastest-growing academic institutions in Israel (130 per cent growth in students in the past five years)… [and] contributes to the scientific, social and spiritual strength of Israel by graduating engineers and academics that are skilled in their chosen profession and erudite in their Jewish heritage.”
