Rapist Gets 8 Years

TORONTO — A former York University student who returned to campus in September 2007 and raped two women in their Vanier College residence rooms received eight years in jail for the crimes last week. Daniel Katsnelson, 27, who graduated from York in 2006, pleaded guilty to the rapes in January. The Crown had sought a 10-year sentence, while the defence asked for five years. Katsnelson’s longtime friend, Justin Connort, pleaded guilty in 2008 to one count of sexual assault and received three years in jail.

Munks Give Gift

TORONTO — A $35- million gift from mining entrepreneur Peter Munk and his wife, Melanie, to the University of Toronto – the largest in its history – will help create a new School of Global Affairs, U of T said last week. The school will be set up with the help of a $25-million provincial grant and incorporate U of T’s Munk Centre for International Studies, established 10 years ago after another Munk gift.
