Looking for wife, must be Republican, short, and willing to relocate. A 78-year-old Jewish papa has placed a full-page ad on behalf of his son, who was none the wiser, titled “Looking For A Wife.” The funny part is the son lives in Utah, while the paper is circulated through northern Idaho. The father, therefore, made it a prerequisite that the woman be willing to relocate. Support for President Barack Obama or Democratic presidential candidate Hillary Clinton are also deal-breakers: “If you voted for Obama or plan to vote for Hillary you are not for me.” The woman’s religion, however, apparently isn’t as important as her politics.
They have klezmer in Japan? Not only are Charan-Po-Rantan hilarious, colourful (literally, just look at their outfits) and fun, but they also make infectious klezmer music that will bring you back to Poland. The best part is the sisters that make up the group were influenced after they first heard Hava Nagila. Talk about transcending cultural boundaries, eh?
If Bill Gates is behind it, it must be good. According to the Jerusalem Post, Microsoft founder Bill Gates has made his first-ever investment in Israel: a newly established technological incubator that will develop medical devices (a bit late to the game there, eh Bill?). The XELERATOR incubator also has investments from Boston Scientific, the Sheba Medical Center, and Intellectual Ventures, totalling over $65 million.
Saying goodbye to yet another good friend of Israel. Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu lauded British Prime Minister (but for how long?) David Cameron following last night’s shocking Brexit vote. Cameron, a staunch advocate for remaining in the EU, announced shortly after the result that he would resign. Cameron is a “respected leader and a true friend of Israel and the Jewish people,” Netanyahu said in a statement, adding that he was sad to see him go. You and me both, Bibi. You and me both.
Scats and laughs. A well-known Canadian Jewish comic, who reinvented herself as an inspirational speaker after battling cancer, has reinvented herself yet again as a jazz singer. Damn Marla Lukofsky, is there anything you can’t do? Lukofsky, whose voice has been compared to Blossom Dearie’s, likes to sing songs that tell a story. Her sets includes mild humour, in the form of banter and song introductions.
